Dealing With a Musty & Moldy Front Loading Washer

Many front load washer owners have encountered the problem of their washer developing a musty smell, or worse, mold growing around the door gasket. If you're in the market to purchase a front load washer, don't let this scare you away, the stoppage for this is straightforward enough, and the positives outweigh this small negative. If you already own a front load washer and are suffering from this issue, there are some straightforward steps you can take that should solve your problem.

Preventing front load washer mold is simple. The musty smell or mold is caused when water can't naturally dry off between loads. In singular the door seal gets some moisture on it, and then when the door is left closed, this moisture cannot evaporate and mold can grow on the door seal. This is a singular issue when the motor only gets used once a week or so. To forestall this, between uses of your front load washer, naturally leave the door open. In the majority of cases this should be sufficient to forestall any musty smell or mold growth. For laundry rooms that are placed in a naturally damp place, like a basement, the extra step of physically wiping off the door seal can be used.

Refrigerator Door Seals

When already suffering from front load washer mold there are some steps that can be taken to endeavor to clean up the issue and forestall its recurrence. It is best to be overly accepted once, instead of dealing with repeated occurrences of the same problem. Step one is fully cleaning the door seal, and the contact surfaces it seals up against. It is recommended to use a soft bristled brush and some bleach for this step. Next, it is foremost to ensure that the inside of the washer is clean and mold free. To do this, run an empty cycle though with just bleach. Following this, put the washer straight through a rinse cycle to ensure that as much bleach as possible is cleaned out to forestall damage to your clothes on the next load. Now again wipe down the door seal and mating surfaces, and anywhere else that water could potentially pool, like in corners of any dispenser cups, and let all things dry out. From now on leave the door open when the washing motor won't be in use for an extended duration of time.
